The Project

Responding to the changing European energy landscape

The European Green Deal requires a large-scale replacement of fossil-fuel generation by low-CO2 technologies, especially distributed energy resources such as photovoltaic and wind turbines.

As these technologies spread, and with the electrification of the heating and mobility sectors, transmission and distribution grids need to be modernised and extended. This shift increasingly relies on lines based on direct current (DC) technology.

A future power grid will then integrate AC lines, DC lines and subsystems in a hybrid system. While this transformation helps address CO2 emissions, it also introduces new challenges for system operators.

Project overview

Bridging the gap between AC and DC control systems

InterSCADA will develop an open-source software framework, corresponding to a modular SCADA platform, for the analysis and control of hybrid AC/DC power grids at multiple voltage levels.

With advanced algorithms for real-time monitoring, control and ancillary services, this will enable operators to quickly adapt to sudden system perturbations and maintain situational awareness.

These solutions will be deployed and tested at demonstration sites in four countries, involving both distribution and transmission system operators.

Furthermore, InterSCADA will provide recommendations for grid codes and standards for hybrid AC/DC systems.

Objectives

Tailor-made solutions for grid control

Grid operators will need a flexible control system if they are to maintain grid stability while managing diverse energy sources.

Develop a flexible data-driven ICT infrastructure to implement a vendor-independent SCADA for hybrid grids

Identify gaps in the existing regulations and grid codes to adapt and ehance existing grid codes

Devise and implement algorithms for real-time operation of hybrid grids to tackle the issue of stability

Validate solutions through real-world demonstrations to ensure replicability of solutions and impact creation

Impacts

Secure, independent, renewable energy for Europe

InterSCADA is poised to deliver an innovative digital solution, creating a scalable, vendor-independent, and open-source SCADA system for managing hybrid AC/DC power networks across European operators at various voltage levels. Relying on advanced technologies such as digital mock-up, real-time digital simulation, and artificial intelligence, this solution aims to elevate the SCADA concept to new levels of sophistication.

InterSCADA will significantly boost the market growth of renewable energy solutions by optimising the use of DC technology. This minimises conversion stages and reduces the need for construction materials in integrating renewable energy sources.

InterSCADA promotes power system reliability by advancing algorithms for monitoring and control. The focus on stability management and ancillary services in AC/DC systems aims at ensuring continuity of service, with cost efficiency driven by advanced analytics and strategic data use for grid operation improvement rather than infrastructure reinforcement.
