On 8 June 2026, the three Horizon Europe projects held a two-hour webinar on hybrid AC and DC grids, a key technology for modernising Europe’s energy system, integrating renewables and supporting electrification. Speakers included representatives from academia, InterSCADA’s partner transmission system operator IPTO, DG ENER at the European Commission, and the cleantech industry.
Alberto Dognini (EPRI Europe) presented InterSCADA, outlining the project’s work on an open-source software framework — a modular SCADA platform for the analysis and control of hybrid AC/DC grids across multiple voltage levels, building on the SOGNO platform. He also highlighted current barriers to HVDC deployment: a lack of regulatory incentives, insufficient DC-specific regulation, and unclear DSO-TSO roles.
Other speakers included Eric Lecomte (DG ENER), who introduced the Commission’s new roadmap for digitalisation and AI in the energy system, alongside colleagues from THEUS and DCforEU who shared their projects’ goals and early results. The panel discussion that followed covered TSO-DSO coordination, the role of energy storage, and regulatory obstacles to adopting new DC technologies.
