The Project
Responding to the changing European energy landscape
The European Green Deal requires a large-scale replacement of fossil-fuel generation by low-CO2 technologies, especially distributed energy resources such as photovoltaic and wind turbines.
As these technologies spread, and with the electrification of the heating and mobility sectors, transmission and distribution grids need to be modernised and extended. This shift increasingly relies on lines based on direct current (DC) technology.
A future power grid will then integrate AC lines, DC lines and subsystems in a hybrid system. While this transformation helps address CO2 emissions, it also introduces new challenges for system operators.
