Advancing the system stability of hybrid AC/ DC networks

The European energy sector is rapidly evolving, to reduce CO₂ emissions and ensure greater independence from imports. Power generation from renewable resources is thus growing, meaning power systems are increasingly hybrid AC/DC. Yet, hybrid systems can hinder system stability and situational awareness, posing a significant challenge to transmission and distribution operators.

THE PROJECT

InterSCADA will develop an open-source, vendor- independent software framework, corresponding to a modular SCADA platform, for the analysis and control of hybrid AC/DC power grids at multiple voltage levels. This will enable operators across Europe to quickly adapt to sudden system perturbations, implement new monitoring and control functions, and maintain situational awareness. Using advanced technologies such as DMU, real-time digital simulation, and AI, this solution elevates the SCADA concept to new levels of sophistication.
InterSCADA will also build on its research to provide recommendations to upgrade existing grid codes and standards.

4 PILOT SITES

The new platform will be deployed and tested in 4 European countries – France, Greece, Italy and Spain – ensuring the solutions envisaged are replicable in diverse geographical settings and against different requirements.

INTERDISCIPLINARITY & TRANSDICIPLINARITY

Coordinated by Fraunhofer, the consortium consists of 18 partners, ranging from electrical utilities to research institutions and spanning across 9 countries in Europe and Taiwan. This will ensure both the representativity of key stakeholders across the value chain, and a
comprehensive coverage of all required scientific expertise.
